Whether you were already publishing an email newsletter or considering starting a new publication, this afternoon seminar had practical tips on:

- Staff (editors, developers)
- Syndication and content feeds
- Subject and audience niche
- Format (e.g. text vs. HTML)
- Mechanics (spacing, layout, etc.)
Management issues
- Subscribers: double-opt-in, block lists, email vs. Web sign-up, welcome/goodbye emails, list maintenance, sub-lists
- Response handling: click-through tracking, mailing drill-down, bounce handling
- Goals: benefits of publishing, strategy

- Subscriber management
- Archive and content management
- Selecting a hosting supplier (outsourced vs. in-house; free vs. fee)
- Recipient software considerations (e.g. size of email, AOL users, HTML)
Finance
- Selling advertising
- Funding and resources
- Technology costs

Attendees were also encouraged to share their experiences of what has worked for them, and what hasn't, for the mutual benefit of the group.

Presenter
The presenter was William Hann, Managing Editor of Free Pint. William has extensive experience of email publishing through building and managing the Free Pint community of 50,000 information researchers.
Free Pint use their own in-house list hosting and subscriber management system, which William has developed from scratch. The Free Pint publishing model was used to provide practical examples of lessons learned, and the pitfalls to avoid when publishing an email newsletter.
