Do we take our skills for granted?
---------------------------------------

If you routinely discount those things that you find easy and simple
to do, and assume that everyone else has those same skills that you
have, then you have fallen into the category of someone who has not
learned the true value of their own skill set.

Of course, there are some people who don't seem to have any problem at
all with blowing their own trumpet, and are quite happy to tell
prospective employers about themselves. However, most of us do not
want to seem arrogant in selling our own abilities, but nor do we want
to be so timid in our outlook that we cannot find anything good to say
about ourselves. So how do we find the happy medium?

A good way to find out what you are really good at is to take a few
minutes and write down all the tasks that you like to do. Do you like
speaking to people, be it on the phone or face to face? Are you a whiz
at filing? Or are you happy to sit and catalogue all day? Have you
received feedback from a colleague or client about something that you
did for them? What did they say?

The key is to know what difference you make to your organisation?

Or do you simply show up for work at the same time each and every day,
do the exact same things and then go home at the same time? If you
fall into this category of employee then perhaps your strengths could
lie in being punctual, reliable and able to get the job done. There
are strengths in all of us, the question is what are your key
strengths, and who knows about them apart from you?

Take a moment or two to have a look at a typical day and write down
everything that you did. Then you will be able to translate those
daily tasks into skills an employer is looking for. To your success.
