Today, Saturday, I have just come home after speaking at a cilip CDG
(Career Development Group) Student Conference held in London.

I came back with a warm glow and the feel good factor, pleased with
myself for having given up my own time to speak. The topic of my
talk was "Selling yourself on paper and in person" one of many
versions of a talk on writing a winning CV, a good application letter
and giving a good interview - a subject that the team at Sue Hill
Recruitment speak about often. I was delighted with the interest and
reaction of the audience and felt good that I was able to share my
knowledge with them.

Most impressive of all to me, though, were the 50 plus delegates who
had given up their Saturday to learn valuable information all on the
subject of Career Development. There were current and prospective
graduate trainees, post graduate students, candidates for Chartership
of cilip and other people who had given up their time to come along
and share their valuable knowledge with others. Some of the delegates
had come from as far away as Glasgow and Aberystwyth so had probably
had to give up more than just their Saturday.

The price for the day was GBP17.63 inc VAT - excellent value for the
quality of the speakers and the information they had to impart. It
also included an excellent lunch and plenty of tea and coffee.

Other speakers included Bob McKee (Chief Executive of cilip), Margaret
Watson (immediate Past President of cilip), Joanna Ball, Ayub Khan and
a panel of local library & information professionals from various
sectors. Additionally several CDG committee members who had organised
the meeting were there. All are busy people, and yet prepared to give
up their time, not just attending and speaking, but also the time
taken to prepare their presentation.

If you are reading this and wondering what this has to do with your
job hunt then you have missed the point. Continuing Professional
Development is the responsibility of the individual and whether it
involves investing your time learning the basics of job hunting and
career development or giving up your time to impart your own
specialist knowledge to others it is a vital factor in the way in
which we can all learn and progress.

I notice in my day-to-day recruitment activities that those who
complain that they are overlooked are often those who sit waiting for
someone to do something for them rather than attending to their own
CPD. Enough said!
