Specialised Services in UK National Health Service

I've been asked by a manager within a UK Primary Care Trust to do some research into potential trends in Specialised Services within the NHS ("what's over the horizon?"). Specialised Services are for high cost, low volume treatments such as heart and lung transplantations or rare diseases.

The requestor suggested 3 perspectives from which to look at this: 1) Demographic need, or population changes - for example more and more preterm babies are surviving and needing specialist care; 2) New technologies - what equipment or drugs might be on the way; 3) Future markets

I don't need an actual list of services or technologies (no crystal ball required!) but I do need help with lateral thinking about resources or organisations that might throw up some possibilities.

I began by finding the commissioning plans of the National Specialist Commissioning Advisory Group (NSCAG) http://digbig.com/4refa and various other of its reports, but my requestor wants to think further into the future.

My next steps will be searching the parts of the Department of Health which concern research, such as NHS R&D, HTA and NICE. I wondered about looking into patents too.

Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated. I need to send at least a first stab at it by 12th February.

Best regards,
Fiona Beyer.
