Image banks and image catalog software

The mention of which search terms guide people to the Free Pint bar had one entry which really surprised me: "image banks".

I'm finding problems maintaining growing numbers of digital image files. I have to find suitable images, take my own photos, and catalogue and file other images.

The 'image banks' search request is of interest to me. I'd be interested to hear of software that helps catalogue image banks and search them.
