 Un-labelled phenomenon?

Does anyone remember from library school, or otherwise know, a term for the following phenomenon?

You want to know something but don't know where to look for it, and the act of asking someone else helps you think of what to do next, independent of the quality of any response.

It seems like the kind of thing that would be written about in Reference Quarterly and the like on the subject of information-seeking behavior. But I can't even think of a term to use to look it up.

Any ideas?

TC

Have you tried "serendipity" - not the exact phenomenon you describe, but maybe as a starting point?
