 Content management for websites

I would be grateful if anyone could offer their experiences in using content management systems for websites that are database-driven (access or sql). I am working on a site that involves various people submitting articles in a particular format (date, time, location and the body of text for example) which could go into a database.

Has anyone used such a system ? What are the limitations ? Is there a limit to how much text you can place in the database ? Would it be easy to create an editing page where I could call up one of the articles from the database, edit, then send it back and updated the fields ? Would I just have to give each article a unique id ? Can you apply formatting to the content you place in the database or would you have to do this via xml parsing or another technology ?

Thanks in advance for you views.
