 Problems with interruptions of desktop

Help, please. Fairly randomly, there is a small screen on my desktop saying it is Isearch, and "you have performed an illegal operation". There are 3 options, including X, which takes you back to your screen of options, hotmail, Netscape, etc.; cancel, which does the same thing.

It is not possible to ignore, because it is right in the middle of everything. A bright spark at the local library says it is because the computer is unhappy with a particular piece of Java script. It happens on both office computers, one library that I use in England and another that I use in Ireland. All ideas welcome.
