 Windows 98 networking and e-mail

I am trying to do something apparently very simple - network two windows 98 machines at home, with fast ethernet pci cards in both, connected by twisted pair cable (ie no hub); and then share files etc and internet access set up on one 'gateway' machine.

We have gone from plug and play through plug and pray to beat with large stick. Assuming that we do eventually get the two machines to recognise each other, can anyone recommend what to do about e-mail, if both machines have access to the net and e-mail? Is it possible to synchronise message folders between outlook or outlook express on the two machines, or would it be preferble to only allow e-mail access from the main 'gateway' machine?

Any hints on setting up the cards to see each other would be appreciated, although my helpful neighbour enjoys a challenge!

Many thanks.
