Office documents opening in multiple windows

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help with a frustration I have with Microsoft Office 2000 ...

In Office 97 which we used to use, if I opened more than one document in Word, say, then I only saw one button on the start bar. However, if I open more than one Word document in Word 2000 (or Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) then it seems to start another copy of the program.

I also find it frustrating because there is no consistency across the programs. For instance, if I have two Excel worksheets open and click on the X at the top right to close it, then it closes the whole of Excel. However, if I do this in Word then it only closes one of the open files. Very frustrating.

I've had a good look around but can't find a setting anywhere to control this behaviour. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance
William
