In an earlier thread, on another topic, I asked the usually fatal "What's Brewers?" (Fatal, in that it marked me as a dead head in certain quarters.) Thank you for holding your laughter.
http://www.map.net did a search for me, for "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" -- and they first reported:
First hypertext version from the new and enlarged edition of 1894, by E. Cobham Brewer. Cross-linked and searchable.

Map.net added,
Batleby.com's publication of Brewer's classic. Includes derivation, source, or origin of common phrases, allusions, and words.
Brewer's classic Dictionary comprising over 18,000 entries that reveal the etymologies, trace the origins and otherwise catalog words with a tale to tell..

I have NO idea what year either of these versions were edited, if these are static pages or dynamic dictionaries...but Ladies and Gentlemen, with your kind permission, you now have two online beginnings -- and so do I.
Thank you all very much!
