 Operating System troubles

The operating systems (i.e. Windows &c.) may be a little off the main interests of this community, but I hope you will all indulge me in a brief enquiry.

I have some sort of corruption in some system files on Windows 98SE, which are causing the occasional system-hangs and rather more frequent unresponsiveness for up to a minute at a time. Before I reinstall the Windows OS, does anyone have any tips or bon mots to pass on?

In case anyone feels the need to know, I am running McAfee VirusScan (bang up-to-date), ZoneAlarm and a couple of other resident utilities which have been fine up till now. I have tried running the PC with none of these operative, and I'm still getting the same problems, so I reckon it has to be the OS. Anyone know differently?

Thanks.

Lance
