I found this site in the TVC Alert at http://www.virtualchase.com
This site is aimed at writers of all kinds and I suppose that's why I quite like it myself. When there's some phrase on the tip of your tongue and you can't quite remember the correct version, you can type one word of it into The Phrase Finder. Alternatively, you can opt for a list of phrases by subject, though the list of subjects is very small.
This is the sort of reference tool that you'll end up using as you see fit. In addition to being a repository of phrases, there are separate lists of euphemisms, proverbs, popular fallacies about phrase origins and misheard song lyrics.
If you are interested in phrases you can join in the discussions or send in your phrases, song lyrics, or whatever. You are also encouraged to send in the origin of phrases, but only where you have some checkable evidence. You are requested not to send in mere conjectures. There are more of these than there are phrases!
The people who are responsible for this site obviously put a lot of work into listing the phrases, their histories, that sort of thing. But there are a lot of things they could have done to allow people to find what they want more quickly.
For instance, if I look up the list of phrases that have recently come into the language, I might want the meaning of some of those phrases. And I might want the origin too. But there is no direct link. I have to look up the phrase again to find its meaning. And when I get the meaning, there's no link to the origin.
My complaint is not just that the process is slower than it needs to be but that people using the site may not bother to check up all the things you can do. They may not see the "meanings and origins" link at the bottom of the home page. And the home page doesn't mention some of the other sections on the site either. You have to go to the "more details" link to find that out.
Despite this, I will certainly be returning to the site now that I've had a good look around and know what it contains.
Cheers
Simon
