As always, there are lots of viruses going around. And there are lots of hoaxes, scams, urban myths, fake sites and rumours going around too. You need to be able to identify this sort of time wasting rubbish and delete it. But you also need to be able to check up on the genuine warnings and viruses. You also have to be able to find out how to deal with infection, either on your own computer on a friend's.
Purportal gathers together some of the best known scam, hoax and virus sites so you can search them all in the one place. Some of these have been mentioned in the Bar before, others haven't. But it's so much easier to bookmark a single site that you can use next time an emergency arises.
As the violent events of September 11 attracted so many hoaxes, rumours and legends, there is a dedicated section on these. It's interesting to read some of the accounts of those who investigated the various items that flew about. It also shows that, while there are idiots prepared to create problems for us, there are also people prepared to help us out too.
In addition to all the well known sites there's also a collection of other sites that may be useful. Again, some of these will be familiar to Free Pinters. This collection includes lists and works in progress as well as completed investigations. You can also find advice on dealing with things like spam and other online misbehaviour, issues often aired in the Free Pint Bar.
