http://www.freeskills.com/ and http://www.free-ed.net/
Whether you are relatively unskilled in computing and Internet matters or you are pretty savvy but wish to keep up with the latest developments, you can get plenty of free tutorials from FreeSkills.com For example, a search for XML turned up eighty hits. These range from pretty introductory ones to more advanced materials. No indication is given of the length of each course but the ones I looked at were quite short, one to three pages.
FreeSkills.com also sells training courses and a search will turn up these and related jobs, relevant books and some recommended Web sites. The Web sites should be a useful addition to the short courses and the books should be useful if you decide to take things a little further.
Courses are available for popular programming languages, applications, protocols and processes including Web marketing and surfing issues. There are over three hundred courses to choose from.
Another site you may wish to look at is Free-Ed.net. It offers fewer courses but they tend to be longer than the ones in FreeSkills.com and this site is still at an early stage of developing its collection. Also, the courses cover subjects such as the arts, languages, journalism and English as a second language.
Sometimes you won't find any courses for a particular subject as they are not yet available. There's a section on other courses but these are not always complete or free. I looked at one which turned out to be a course outline and another which was about a course available on a CD-ROM that you have to buy. However, I looked at some of the free courses that are available and they certainly seemed good.
I'm sure you'll find some interesting courses on these sites to help you while away the long winter nights.
Cheers
Simon
