You know the way most conventional search tools only update their indexes every twenty or thirty days? So if you are looking for current or breaking news you need a tool that indexes more frequently, at least daily. Daypop does exactly that. It crawls news sites, blogs, online newspapers and magazines. At the moment it is indexing nearly 6000 sites a day. They are adding to this list all the time and you can add sites they should be indexing if you know any.
The search is pretty straightforward, with a simple search box on the home page. There's also an advanced search for those who want to streamline things a bit. It allows you to fiddle around with types of news source (news, blogs, both), number of hits per page, dates, languages and countries of origin. You also have the option to save your search preferences. The search tips page will give you the low down on how to use Daypop.
You can find out the top forty stories people are looking at for a given time if you wish to. News junkies may find peace of mind in this, knowing that they are not missing out on anything. Unfortunately, some of the hits just had a URL with no title or details. And what "most people" search for ranges from the serious to the totally whimsical. It may develop into something useful though.
For each hit, you can use the citations link to find references to the story, if there are any. That is, other sites that link to the story. That's a good way of finding out various different reactions to and opinions on a particular story.
So next time you want to keep up with a breaking stroy or find out about something currently in the news, Daypop should be one of the first places you look.
Cheers
Simon
