Dear Free Pinters

This should be a simple one...for a museum curator at least!

I am working on a web site for a private collector who currently has 8000+ items and objects in their collection, related to one animal. The collection comprises representations of said animal in all forms, ceramics, glass, textiles, printed art, sculpture, jewellery etc etc.

Is there a standard taxonomy whereby one could set out on the no doubt endless task of actually cataloguing this huge collection of objects. Or is it 'just' a case of designing a database with the right slice and dice to enable reasonable searching criteria.

Any suggestions? This is a private collection - run for pleasure not profit, so solutions may be complex but not costly! The catalogue will not be used on the website - it is only needed to bring some sort of order to the collection -but it would be computerised and could be supported by digital photos of all objects.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Charlie Elsey
