If I make an index to a published serial, with the sweat of my brow - or in the case I have in mind, the sweat of my Assistant's brow - for my own convenience, and then decide to put it on a website for other people's convenience, will I be pursued by lawyers on the grounds that I have reproduced the titles of articles without asking first?

It's all right to cite an article in a footnote (I think): it's probably all right to cite thirty-five articles in thirty-five footnotes (or even in a bibliography): does it make a difference if there are thirty articles in forty volumes, all listed in my index?

I know what the common sense answer is. But I am checking here to find out if there is another answer (in my view, perhaps, rather less sensible)

As I understand copyright law what you are reproducing is a list and nothing more so you should be ok ...
