Can someone please help me from going insane!!

This a recurring thread from me and I've had some good advice before, especially from my "mentor" Stuart Cliffe, which helped me a couple of times.

I'm running a Pentium III, 500Hz machine using Windows ME with 375 Mg of memory, which I installed in the hope of speeding things up. I'm running Rambooster, which frequently reports that I only have about 20% of memory available.(Yes I know Stuart, you've explained it all to me before, but then how does my partner with her measly 64Mg seem to have no problems?)
I've a few things running in the background, Virus checker, Firewall etc., but I've closed down absolutely everything which the machine doesn't need to run. I delete all my junk files, internet temp files etc at least once a week, shut everything off and run Scandisk and Defrag. I've run more Virus Checkers than I've had hot dinners.

It's the "slowly opening (and now running) Microsoft Word syndrome again, only worse. This morning after clicking on the icon it took 52 seconds of staring at an eggtimer symbol before the machine would let me do anything and it was ready to work. If I try to print a document it takes 41 seconds to even get my printer options box open, then about another 38 seconds or more before it slowly lumbers into operation, during which times my machine appears "hung". Excel is now beginning to do the same, though not to the same extent (yet). I've tried uninstalling MS Office and Printer, defragging and installing them again (shutting everything else down before I do so), but to no avail. Now some of my other programmes are beginning to slow up, and I spend hours looking at an apparently frozen machine every day. Just writing and printing a letter and envelope has become a major time-consuming chore.

I sometimes wonder if my Hard Drive is faulty and reading slowly, but some programmes seem unaffected, so am I wrong?? Would I benefit from re-formating my hard drive and starting again do you think?? If anyone thinks so please give me DETAILED STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS suitable for a nincompoop of 57 years of age, who has a REASONABLE amount of computer literacy.

Please Help,

Tony Walton
