Am fishing for expertise and thoughts on broadband solutions for rural areas - in this case the Yorkshire Dales.
There is substantial European and UK grant funding to provide broadband solutions but there seems to be little interest in investigating doing so in deeply rural areas with low populations and few commercial properties eg the Dales. The takeup in urban areas is still low and everyone seems to need to do it as a commercial success rather than seeing the potential in just getting everyone connected and see what develops from that.
So the Dales isn't even considered and we need to find out this information ourselves it seems, despite the fact our local and central government pay people to do this - they just aren't. Can you help us find out what we need to know? We don't necessarily KNOW what we need to know, so all info appreciated!
Potential solutions, as I understand it
Satellite - Highlands and Islands have this, and Cornwall is going for it but there are cons to satellite starting with expense and poor connections in bad weather etc, plus rumours from the States that often the connection is no better than bog standard 56k modem. Plus National Parks don't seem very keen on approving planning permission for huge satellite dishes!
ADSL/DSL/SDSL etc - haha!! As if a rural area could even dream of this! The distance from most houses to the nearest pub is more than 5.5k let alone to the telephone exchange.
Cable - prohibitively expensive and only caters to a small percentage of total population whether residential or commercial due to distance between houses etc. Think that's why it's called rural! But although Cumbria are planning to ringfence the entire county with cable with spurs into populations of over 1000 people, Yorkshire don't appear to be thinking that way.
Radio/wireless - this is possibly the most likely solution as could buddy onto mobile masts etc. But what are the drawbacks in rural areas with big hills? Costs?
Laser, using electric cables as in Germany etc - don't know enough about it. Any other possibles - new technology etc?
This is just a matter of getting as much info as possible before a May deadline for a grant bid. All help much appreciated.
Thanks
Lindsey Annison
