How much do engineering and manufacturing companies spend on R&D?

I am trying to find this out on a per-industry / per-country basis, and if possible by company.

I have tried google and all the resulting sources. The data is actually on www.compustat.com, which is a subscription site.

Also, how many engineering/manufacturing establishments are there in each country? This data is on the UNIDO site but again, subscription only.

Thank you!

James
