 Spam Wars Continued...

I wrote about the War Against SPAM in Free Pint No 109, and as with all wars, the arms race continues.

I recently trialled some new software called ‘MailWasher’ and have now paid to register it - which is about as complimentary as I can get. See http://www.mailwasher.net for more information.

This is a 1.5 meg free download - registration is optional.

MailWasher imports mail account settings from your mail software, and can check several accounts. While you are connected to the net, MW will look at your mail servers and download the headers of received mail, leaving the original information in place.

Using its own rules, plus others you can specify, MW will mark all the mail you receive as friendly, or - with degrees of certainty from ‘possible’ to ‘blacklisted’ - spam.

Individual mails can be read to confirm or change the decision, and marked for deletion from the server without downloading.

The bit I really like is that spam emails can be ‘bounced’ back to the sending ISP with a (false) “Error 550 - address not found”, which should persuade even the most dedicated spammers that your email address is not worth abusing.

The software will also and very easily show the complete header of the email so that especially annoying examples can be reported.

-Having completed all activity related to marking, bouncing and deleting spam mail, MailWasher will start your normal mail software to allow you to download and read/ reply normally to the mail that you want to receive.

Mail download times are much reduced - not least because mail requiring foreign character sets can be deleted at source, and all spam control has already been completed elsewhere.

(Set your normal mail software to check for new mail only when you request it - MW will sit in the system tray and make mail noises if/ when it detects new messages. For those with limited system capacity, this reduces overheads and helps speed browsing a little.)

For the record, I have no connection with MailWasher other than being a very satisfied user!
