 What is '.net'?

I don't understand what Microsoft's ".net" is all about.
I've had trouble understanding Microsofts own explanation on its site.

I'm not ignorant about computer matters. I support an NT network and I can edit a registry direct and am always the first port of call when friends want advice about how to find information on the web. But I've got only the barest clue about the implications of 'dotnet'.

Can anyone suggest a site that tries to explain, in words of less than one syllable, what '.net' is all about?

Thanks
Andrew Denny
