 The benefits of spam.

I'm looking for research on the market for email spam, and how it profits its senders (not its recipients!). Has anyone done such research?

Clearly it is rewarding its organisers - the ones who compile and sell the lists and arrange the mailouts - but is it a profitable marketing approach if you actually have something to sell? And, just as interestingly, something to campaign about. (e.g. the provisional wing of a particular political campaign).

I'm not looking to start an exchange of opinions here; I'm hoping to find out if someone's done some solid research on the subject.
