I came across a feature article about knowledge management in a
newspaper yesterday. I don't know if that means that the subject is
passé or that the phenomenon is so ubiquitous that it can now appear
in the mainstream press, albeit the online section.
But I have tried to explain the concept of knowledge management to
people in various different ways and they always see it as something
employers can avail of to debrief employees before ejecting them from
the organisation.
Why is this? Could it be because it's true? Gerry McGovern writes
that the old promise of lifelong employment has been replaced by
lifelong learning and that knowledge sharing is part of this process
of lifelong learning, that it contributes to the good of the sharer.
My own experience of lifelong learning is that I put in the work, the
time and the money. And the employer benefits. My having the skills I
bring to the company does not guarantee anything, neither in terms of
long term employment nor in terms of further training support. Have I
got it all wrong or is Gerry surrounded by a rose tinted aura?
