Hi,

I have just started looking into doing a Masters in Information Management and think I have finally worked out what the job actually involves...generally! But I still have a couple of questions that not even CILIP has been able to answer (excuse my blasphemy) - so perhaps you could help:

1. What is the difference between Info Management and Scientist? Is it simply that the scientist creates databases whilst the manager budgets the info needs of a company? If so, does the manager get to do any of the researching - which is the factor that got me interested in this sector in the first place.

2. Why the need for so many different databases?! If an information professional in a law library wants to find out about drug patents, what is wrong with a keyword search of its library index? Similarly, if governmental procedures over GM foods is required, what's wrong with www.defra.gov.uk ? My initial reaction when I discovered that the Information sector existed was, "What's wrong with GOOGLE?" - I still can't dismiss this! Do companies use specific databases or search engines to refine searches - does this not restrict the info available??

3. Once I am satisfied I am entering the correct profession for me I want to apply for graduate traineeships for this September. Whilst some are advertised on CILIP, is it worth sending a CV to business that may not advertise e.g. PricewaterhouseCoopers? Or is this not how things are done? Anyone know of other advertisement boards?

4. Is there anyone out there that is an Information Professional in a sector where my Biology degree would be of use? Perhaps I could target these for traineeships or later careers.

Well, that's about it for now. I'm obviously less clued up than I was before writing this but best get it all out now, hey?

Thank you for any advice and guidance.

Ben.
