Hi
There are loads of ways you can change how the Bar works and I'm sure many users aren't aware of most of them.
So, here's the top five I use the most myself:
(1)
To view all messages in a thread, click on the 'Flat View' link (next to the 'Start new topic | Message Index' links at the top of the page). This will show all postings in a thread, 'chained' together.
(2)
The 'Preferences' link in the paragraph at the top of each Bar page is where you can choose from a whole raft of options and save them against your FreePint account for future use.
You might be particularly interested in the following options:
-- setting the date format to 'MM/DD/YY' instead of the default UK format of 'DD/MM/YY'.
-- viewing both a message *thread* and/or the message *index* in 'flat' or 'threaded' view
-- choosing how far back to go with messages and how many to show 'per page' in the Bar Message Index.
-- how many words to show of each posting in the Message Index. The default is the first 20 words, but you can set as many or few as you want.
-- you can set a 'Signature' to be automatically appended to each posting you make.
(3)
There is an HTML version of the twice weekly email Bar Digest.
This is great in that the table of contents at the top of the list of latest postings is 'hypertext activated' so that you can quickly jump to a posting in the Digest and then back to the top.
To request the HTML Bar Digest simply login to your 'Member Account Page' page at http://www.freepint.com/member and modify your 'Subscriptions'.
(4)
A whole raft of other settings can be made through the 'Member Account Page' mentioned above. There is a convenient link to the Bar Preferences and you can print off past invoices if you've ever purchased anything from FreePint.
The 'Member Account Page' is also accessible by clicking on the 'My Account' link under the date on the top left of any page on the FreePint Web site.
(5)
Don't forget about the Bar Browser and Search facilities.
The Bar Browser is at http://www.freepint.com/bar/browser/ and is a great way to browse the Bar by subject category.
The Search facility can be accessed either through the 'Quick Search' box at the top of the Bar Message Index or through the search page at http://www.freepint.com/search . The Bar search index is updated in 'real time', so as soon as a posting goes up at the Bar then it's locatable through Search.
Hope that gives you some new features to check out at the Bar to make your interaction with it more manageable.
All the best
William
