Hello everyone
My name is Eluned Cook and I am an MA Librarianship student. I would like to invite library and information professionals from workplace libraries in the London area to attend a focus group as an essential part of the research for my dissertation project.
The research topic for my study is the perceptions of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals held by professional librarians and information specialists in workplace libraries and information units.
The research aims of my study are:
To discover what library and information professionals in workplace libraries think of CILIP as a professional organisation, what expectations they have of it, and what role they think such an organisation should perform.
To compare these views with the views of employees of CILIP and the publicly expressed views and aims of CILIP.
To provide a better understanding of why workplace library and information professionals are comparatively under represented in the CILIP membership, and to suggest ways that this might be rectified, or to act as a platform for further study in this area.
Whilst I am not actually working for CILIP, the organisation is aware of my study and is very interested in the findings and outcomes of the research.
One focus group will take place on each of the following dates: Tuesday 22nd July, Wednesday 30th July, Tuesday 5th August, Wednesday 6th August, and Thursday 7th August. All focus groups will take place in the afternoon from 3pm and will take around one and a half hours, no more than two hours. Refreshments will be provided. Focus groups will be held at the CILIP Headquarters at Ridgmount Street in central London.
If anyone wishes to contribute to my research but is unable to attend one of the focus groups then I would appreciate the opportunity to meet for an individual interview at another time and place, at your convenience. Individual interviews will take no more than one hour.
Focus groups and interviews will be recorded on audio tape, but anonymity of individuals is guaranteed. Participants in focus groups and interviews will only be identified in the final report by gender, job title and sector in which they work. It is not necessary that the participants know anything about CILIP, although they should be prepared to discuss the role of professional organisations in their working lives.
