 FreePint's Server Move to Willco

Hi

Many of you have emailed, phoned and commented at the Bar that things seem to be different with various parts of the FreePint Web site over the last few days.

I have not posted this message sooner because since Thursday of last week we have been working hard (until late every night and most of the weekend) to try and seamlessly make a big server move. We are still working on various things, but here's the reason for the move:

Over the last six years we have developed a lot of technology from the ground up to support the large membership of the FreePint community. This includes mailing system (to send out all the emails), databases (including jobs, events, portal, etc.) and community features like the Bar and Student Bar.

As the systems worked so well, especially the mailing system, we started to offer hosting services to other publishers. FreePint has been a host of about 50 other digital publications for a few years now.

In April of this year all the technology was moved to Free Pint Limited's sister company Willco Limited http://www.Willco.com which I also run. Willco therefore became the provider of community hosting services which makes much more sense since FreePint is an online community not a hosting provider.

So from April we've been running two systems and gradually migrating customers from one (FreePint) to the other (Willco). The most difficult and daunting of these to move is of course FreePint, because there's so much more than simply a mailing system. The login functionality is tied into our eCommerce engine (enabling you to buy reports and pay for job listings, for instance), set Bar preferences, remember a job profile, etc.

Rather than simply 'kludge' the Willco system to work with the myriad FreePint systems, we have designed and built a 'modular' system, whereby features on the FreePint site (like the Bar) become Modules within Willco's system (in this case the Forums Module).

This is a very exciting strategy as it means Willco can offer much more than simply list hosting services. We have already rolled out the Forums Module and have a number of large customers already using that to host both public and private threaded discussion forums, for example.

A Willco Modules customer can load 'headers' and 'footers' so that users think they are on the customer's site, and can even implement 'sub-domains' so that it looks like you're on the same server. A good example of this is with FreePint -- visit FreePint's homepage and you're on www.freepint.com, however visit the Bar and you may notice the URL is now web.freepint.com. Most people will never notice the change.

So, FreePint now uses the Willco Modules system as of last Thursday. We're gradually moving all the features that were available in the old system, such as preferences, etc. We also aren't getting moderation emails from the new system -- with the old Bar we were emailed with each new posting. In the new one we're currently having to manually moderate the Bar which is a lot more inconvenient. We're doing it, but it's not so easy as before, for now.

This is a very exciting time for both FreePint and Willco. Both companies can promote their strengths and concentrate on their core skills. We're also creating the first issue of FreePintVIP http://www.FreePintVIP.com/ which will be launched at the Online Information show in December. Also, all services will shortly be re-branded with their new logos which are being worked on at the moment. DigBig's has just been launched at http://www.DigBig.com/

Lots of things happening, lots of work done, lots of work still to do. If you do come across any problems, errors or missing features then please do continue to send them to support@freepint.com. Your input really is valued.

Thanks for bearing with us and thank you all for your concern and support.

Best regards
William
