Since BL's BookNet service closed last year, does anyone know of any service that helps libraries in the UK co-operate over disposals of books?
I have a specific reason for asking - I work for the Tavistock Institute, a registered charity. We're trying to gather and preserve the books published by Tavistock Publications (the publishing company we used to own) so that people can get to read them - nearly all of the 600 titles are out of print and increasingly hard to find, or very expensive to buy (Routledge reprinted some but they're £70 each). People expect us to have them in our library and are disappointed when we don't.
The books are important as they're mostly studies of British society - things like 'Coal is our Life', a study of Yorkshire miners just before the strikes of the 1980s.
If anyone can help with details of any replacement for BookNet, or any Tavistock Publications that need a home, I'd be really grateful. I've tried LSE and some other likely libraries but they told me they just sell the books to their users and wouldn't offer any to us, even though we'd be happy to pay and collect them. My last resort will be to buy up whatever I can find on the internet, but I'm a bit concerned if there's no replacement for BookNet anyway. If you've read Double Fold you'll understand what I mean.
