Software advice please!!

1. File maintenance programs for downloads

I would appreciate your advice on a combination of an idiot-proof Uninstaller and Registry “Cleaner” (not necessarily in the same application) which would allow me to download, test and if necessary get rid of new programs without clogging up my registry with remnants. I do not regard myself as competent to undertake registry alterations or maintenance unless this is totally foolproof.

I am aware that there are various programs on the market, freeware, shareware and full-price, which claim to do such tasks, but I suppose that some are better than others. With registry matters I would prefer not to take risks by selecting at random.

2. Security

Similarly I am aware that there are various “password managers” on offer as above which allow you to store records of passwords in encrypted files on your PC. For example the Avant Browser Overlay comes with the “Roboform” password manager. For some technical reason this does not like you to save the password(s) in the obvious place, a floppy disc, but insists they should be stored on the hard disc. My gut feeling is that however good the encryption, having such sensitive data in the PC is an invitation to hackers who could make life very unpleasant if they penetrate the codes. I would appreciate expert advice for or against.

Thanks!
