Hello,

I am currently studying for the MA Librarianship qualification at the University of Sheffield, the final part of which is to conduct a
research-based dissertation on a topic of the student’s own choosing. I have chosen to look into the changing roles of UK media information professionals and hope that the information gathered during this project will help to raise the profile of media library and information services in the UK, as well as provide valuable information to both people currently working in this field and prospective entrants.

A physical copy of any dissertation produced for a course at the
University of Sheffield is held within the University library and
bibliographic details are also displayed on the online departmental publications database. The full text dissertation, however, will only be available to staff and students of the University, although I also intend to produce an anonymised short report based on the findings, a copy of which will be sent to the Association of UK Media Librarians and the CILIP Industrial and Commercial Libraries Group.

The aim of the dissertation is to provide a detailed review of
competencies and responsibilities currently associated with media librarianship in both regional and national media libraries and the first part of the research is a short questionnaire. If you are a media information professional and have not received the questionnaire through any of the other lists, I would be very grateful if you could forward me your details so that I can send you a copy of the questionnaire in return. I would be extremely grateful if you could complete the questionnaire and email/post it back to me before Friday 9th July 2004 and if you could also forward this message to other media librarians who may not receive this email via any of the normal channels.

Many thanks for your time,

Best wishes,

Fiona Alexander
