This was the closing line of our last article for the newsletter - but
gaining control of your career development can seem a daunting task.
External factors can seem overwhelming and out of your control; budget
restrictions prevent you developing your role as you would wish,
redundancies are threatened, new staff are appointed over you or to
work with you ...
However, there are things you can do to feel more in charge of your
own Continuing Professional Development. A good first move is to take
a step back from immediate concerns and spend some time evaluating
your own skills and experience base. Think about all the tasks you
carry out and things you achieve each day; what skills are you using
to accomplish them? Which of these things do you enjoy doing and
bring you satisfaction?
Are there tasks you would like to be doing, that you have seen
colleagues do or read about? What skills are needed to do them? Do
you have those skills? Could you put yourself forward (perhaps as
holiday/sick cover) to do them? If you currently lack a necessary
skill perhaps you could develop it in a different setting if a budget
isn't available through work based training courses. For example on a
committee for a club.
Once you have a clear idea of your own skills and what you enjoy
doing, you can look out at other roles (via job advertisements,
agencies, discussions with friends) to see which ones call for the
skills set that you have. Don't restrict yourself to the sector you
currently work in - transferring your skills to a new area is
perfectly possible with a positive attitude and confident approach.
