 Becoming a Librarian...where do I start?

Hi, I hope this is in the right place...

I graduated in 2003 with a degree in Linguistics and Sociology, and after a year of temping, unemployment and wondering what I want to do with the rest of my life, I'm now considering a career as a librarian. My main interests are in the social sciences/popular culture, youth culture, or perhaps working in a sound or picture archive (my dream job would be record librarian!)

With this in mind, how would I best enter the profession? Not only am I not sure about whether to go for Information Management or Librarianship as an MA as I might prefer to work in a sound archive to academic librarianship, but I'm confused about becoming a trainee. Could I take a job in a public/academic library to gain experience as an assistant, or is it preferable to take a graduate traineeship? I feel I may have missed out this time round on the latter, and don't want to waste any more time than I have already after four months of unemployment...

The second question is referees-presumably one would be connected with your year as a trainee, but as far as academic referees go I didn't have a university tutor for the entire duration of my course, and as I got some bad results in my final year due to health and financial problems (I got a 2:1 in the end) I'm wondering whether this will reflect badly on me. Similarly, I'm wondering whether having been a graduate for a year already and spending time unemployed might look bad when applying for a traineeship. Please help! Thanks.
