Interviews, and How to Survive Them

If you have heeded advice from previous articles, you will have worked
on your continuous professional development and honed your CV to a
thing of perfection. Result? You now have an interview.
Whilst I don't expect that many readers will actually relish the idea
of an interview, it is still your opportunity to shine, to make a
positive impression on a prospective employer. If you get nervous
that's no bad thing; you do need some adrenalin to kick-start your
performance, and even the most accomplished candidate will suffer from
some qualms.
But the one thing that lets so many people down is lack of
preparation. This really is of paramount importance, and without it
you are dashing your chances before you even arrive. Most preparation
is common sense. You need to know the basics; where you're going and
whom you're seeing. You also need to have reviewed your own
application - nothing looks more stupid than the candidate who cannot
remember their own CV.
No question should come as a complete surprise. It's not too difficult
to second-guess what you are going to be asked. Every interviewer is
looking for examples of your past achievements and concrete evidence
as to why employing you will be of benefit to their organisation. Of
course it is true that you are attending interview to see whether you
are interested in a job or organisation, but don't forget that the
interviewer actually holds the cards.
Ensure that you have questions ready to ask, and if you are interested
in the role then tell them so, they won't know otherwise. If you are
keen, a final tip is to follow up with an email thanking the
interviewer(s) for their time and reiterating your interest. It's all
simple and straightforward advice - make the most of it, and you can
take the sting out of the interview process and turn it to your
advantage.
