I suspect we have all been guilty of a little creative writing when
putting together an application. However, there are a few things you
should try and avoid.
Do not go on and on and on and on. Prospective employers want to know
what difference you are going to be making to their organisation. They
do not want to see that you are skilled in basket weaving or
calligraphy, have 17 pet cats and like to read. Unless your hobbies
and interests directly relate to the job on offer, then leave them
out.
The same must be said for listing every task, no matter how small for
every job that you've held in the last 10 years. In a word – don't.
What you should be doing is ensuring that you highlight those skills
and abilities you have, to the job that is on offer. Read the
application package, selection criteria and advertisement and you
should be able to pick out the essential keywords and phrases that you
need to consider when applying for any job. But another don't – do not
repeat their phrases back to them, keywords are important, but use
your own words to express the same or similar concepts. Be remembered
for innovation and creativity, not pedantic parroting.
Do not leave gaps. If you took a year out to travel – say so.
Do not lie – whilst a little creative writing is to be expected. Do
not upskill job titles to try and make your job sound far more
interesting than it actually was. Do not say that you have
qualifications when you don't, or take credit for someone else's good
idea or success. Remember that reference checks will be conducted.
And finally - Don't waste people's time applying for jobs that you
don't really want.
