Presenting Yourself - A Quick Guide

When job-hunting how you present yourself is vitally important to how
successful you are. Presentation of your skills, your experience,
your aptitudes, your personality and your appearance will all have a
bearing on the opinions formed about you by recruiting managers.
Self-presentation is as important in writing as it is in person.
Receipt of a 10 page CV packed with dense paragraphs is going to give
a certain impression of your ability (or rather, lack of ability) to
communicate in a clear, concise or persuasive way.
Similarly, sending a CV slimmed down to one page of bland, generic
bullet points says so little about you and what you have to offer that
few employers are likely to want to offer an interview, or a CV
including grammatical or spelling errors or formatting inconsistencies
only serves to highlight a (lack of) attention to detail.
Receipt of a cover letter that repeats material presented in a CV or
application form is going to speak volumes about your lack of
creativity or ability to think laterally and your lack of appreciation
of how to address required criteria and build a business case.
Personal presentation at an interview is also of key importance. Not
only the obvious points about appearance - nice suit, groomed hair,
etc - but also your body language and how you phrase your replies and
your tone of voice.
It is important that all the 'cues' that you are giving out to your
interviewer are positive ones. There are few things more off-putting
for a recruiter than an interviewee sitting slouched in a chair, or
fiddling nervously with their clothing, or answering questions while
staring at the wall.
When you are preparing for the interview, it is best not to just think
in general terms of what sort of content you will put into your
answers to all the questions you can predict you may be asked, but to
actually speak your replies out load in full, so you can practice
phrasing them in a positive way and with a positive tone of voice.
Many employers are just as interested in employing candidates with the
'right' attitude and approach to their work as those with the 'right'
skills and experience or background. Enthusiasm, eagerness, genuine
interest in/passion for a subject - these are the most commonly
requested characteristics we come across as recruitment consultants,
so think about how you are going to present yourself so as to get
these qualities across to an interviewer.
