We've received a handful of queries regarding changes in the FreePint Newsletter, and we expect that other readers have similar questions. In the interest of clarity, we offer FreePinters more information about our strategies and objectives.
We discontinued the PDF version of FreePint as of 1 April and had been communicating the change since the start of 2008. This shift enables us to move our production resources to other parts of the business where they are more valued. Fewer and fewer users were accessing the PDF version of FreePint, and HTML suits the content of the newsletter more effectively.
The FreePint Newsletter still has the same amount -- or more -- user-oriented content in the newsletter as before, but rather than reproducing all that content directly in the newsletter, we link to it. Again, our goal is to reduce the production burden on our small staff while directing people to the resources that they need.
Each issue of the FreePint Newsletter (http://www.freepint.com/issues/) links to the following free, user-oriented content:
+ Two tips articles in FUMSI (which may easily be emailed, printed or saved for free) (http://web.fumsi.com/go/article/)
+ ResourceShelf resources for web-based research in free, high-quality sites (http://www.resourceshelf.com/)
+ DocuTicker resources of grey literature on the web (http://www.docuticker.com/)
+ VIP LiveWire postings on news analysis in the information (http://web.vivavip.com/forum/LiveWire/)
+ Plus Tipples and the Bar summary
The fact is that running FreePint requires a great deal of time and expense. We pay editors, production, technical support and hosting, external consultants for research projects and product reviews and more. Advertising helps us keep content (such as the high-quality articles in FUMSI) free. Paid-subscription publications like VIP are another part of our mix. As the business has evolved over the past 10 years, we've matured in our revenue mix and feel that we are now settling on the right balance of free advertising and sponsor supported content, subscriptions and ad hoc purchases.
We hope this information is clear and useful, and we welcome any feedback or comments you may have, either here in the Bar or privately to support@freepint.com.
Best regards,
Robin
