URGENT help please - recruitment problem

This is along the lines of 'Who needs a professional research and information officer now we've all got google"!

I've been interviewing with a couple of admin-based colleagues for a research/info officer to carry out desk research, literature searches, current awareness and to manage a small library for professional senior managers in social care, mainly national and internal policy documents, higher level reports - you know the sort of thing. None of the applicants came close to what I wanted, unfortunately the job desc and person spec were drawn up before I started in post or I would've changed the emphasis then. However I've now been given 24 hours to come up with a good case why the post should be readvertised as I want or they will appoint someone who hadn't heard of a search engine (let alone any of the named ones), thought the Dept of Health was the extent of health and social care knowledge, (there are plenty of specialist info resources); had no concept of evaluating websites - said she trusted instinct when looking at information. The others on the panel said that these were technical skills that I could teach her while line managing her, and that as long as she had answered the other stock questions ok(team work, strengths and weaknesses etc stuff), they thought she could learn and her lack of research knowledge didn't matter.

Should I go with them or am I being super-protective of my profession and unreasonable? If so, can you come up with some good arguments for me? We're paying just over £17k pa.
Thanks
