 regional search: local information

I am trying to search for local information. Examples are "builders, motoring schools, traders, etc. in a local area, say Reading, Surrey, etc.".

The information is more related to everyday life needs. If I go for "google" style search engines, most of the hits are irrelevant, ie., outside my local area. Is there a way to narrow this kind of search down to a local area? Is there any such portals for U.K. regions, towns or cities?

I think that would be more helpful to ordinary people.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Why not try the Yellow Pages at http://www.yell.co.uk or Thompsons at http://www.infospace.com/uk.thomw/ Rob
