Someone asked at interview today a question we are invariably asked.
'What's the job market like?'
This is one of those questions to which we cannot give a standard
answer, because every day of the week the view is different. At
present, in terms of volume of jobs, numbers are over double what they
were six months ago. (Six months ago they were a quarter of what they
were two years previously). However, individual jobs are like the No.9
bus. They come in convoys or not at all. Just as two of our key people
went off for a well deserved break, we took 5 senior (and somewhat
complex) jobs and 10 of the more usual temporary and permanent
vacancies in less than an hour. The previous week we had been
comparatively quiet and I had been lulled into a false sense of
security that we would manage happily while the others holidayed.
If you speak to someone in the HR department of a large company or the
manager of a medium to large team, they will often tell you that after
a stable period within in a particular department, one person leaves
and then all of a sudden two or three follow. The No.9 bus equivalent
of feast of famine!
Whatever the volume of jobs, it is a fact that good people are hard to
find. Often the perfect person for a job will come onto our radar just
after the job has been offered and accepted; a sort of reverse
serendipity. Candidates, particularly senior ones, often remark that
they saw a good job advertised too late in the day to do that
essential work on their CV and application. One recently sat in an
airport lounge trying to get his application finished to email before
he got on a plane for a two week holiday. He didn't succeed and missed
the deadline. It was that or miss the plane. Holiday or future career?
A hard call.
It's absolutely essential that you keep your CV up-to-date and ready
to fire off when the need arises. Even if you feel that there are no
jobs around for you, you should be aware that they may just be queuing
up around the corner waiting to ermerge when your time is at a
premium. It is YOU that you are investing in and you owe it to
yourself to keep your finger on the pulse.
