I have just won a contract to advise on the information content of - among other things - an Intranet to be set up in a small Government agency. I have never myself worked in any body which had its own intranet, so have no first hand experience of using one.
Can anyone point me to any published research in this area? I imagine that there are lots. In particular, I am interested in knowing what types of info users find it helpful to have on an intranet (e.g. internal telephone lists, announcements of pay rises, etc), and what systems can be used to track who is / is not using the system and how often. It occurs to me that Intranets might be a better source of static information to be consulted when needed (e.g. allowances for travel) and that e-mails are better as an alerting mechanism. Would other readers agree?
All thoughts gratefully received.
Alan
