 value of free information

I'm just kicking off some research into the value of free information. ie does free = worthless, expensive = value.

First of all, does any-one have any pointers into anything that already exists to save me starting from scratch?

Also, what do information professionals feel? Do customers/ users make value judgements about usefulness (either consciously or not) if something doesn't have a price?

Any-one prepared to share experiences of introducing charging for services would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Linda
