How to recognise legal music downloads

There has recently been a lot of publicity about fees of £2000 or more levied on people who have been downloading music from the Internet in breach of copyright.

However there are many sites which offer "free" music downloads; typing "download mp3 OR midi" or ""folk music" mp3" into Google gives lots of hits. I would like to listen to some of these but do not wish to infringe anyone's copyright and risk a big bill. How can I tell which sites are safe and which are pirates, given that the illegal sites are unlikely to label themselves as such?
