 WiFi - extending the range

I'd appreciate knowing ways of finding how to extend my laptop's wi-fi range. I often find myself on the edge of a reception area. I'm on a canal boat, and I can rig up an aerial, even with a 12v or 240v supply. But I'm not in a position to boost the transmission signal. How do I find out how to increase the signal into my computer?

Thanks
Andrew Denny
