Children fingerprinted for library lending system

Dear education librarians,
Has any of you had direct experience of the library-lending system which relies upon finger-printing children (see link to article below)?
Parental permission has to be obtained in order to take photographs or videos of childred in schools, so this system is starting to attract a fair amount of (often outraged) attention. I would be interested to hear the librarians' viewpoint.

From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/2144188.stm
"Tens of thousands of children are being fingerprinted in school - often without the consent of their parents, a human rights group has complained.
Prints are taken for a library lending system which the makers say makes lending more efficient and less vulnerable to abuse.
But the pressure group Privacy International says the practice is illegal and breaches the human right to privacy."

Thank you
Sarah Hinton
