I read message #8898 about Teachers looking for second careers and checked out the website.
More and more schools are beginning to recognise the status of librarians/information centre managers as they improve information services in schools and incorporate new technology. I was disappointed to find no category for librarians on this site, so I emailed the site pointing this out - very politely.
This was the reply (complete and unexpurgated!)
>Hi Lynn,
Thank you for your e mail.
We have a section for these vacancies ( Administration )

Isn't it time that we educated the general public about the skills we info professionals have and can pass on - seeking, retrieving, storing, managing and presenting information?
Librarians have for too long been regarded as little more than manual workers. To be categorised in administration does not acknowledge that we are generally educated and trained to the same standards as (or higher than) teachers, with our post-grad Dip or Masters degree.
Perhaps a few more complaints to this site http://www.education-jobs.co.uk will wake them up to our value. After all, what is the use of technology (which now underpins all academic learning and is becoming essential for improved life chances) if one hasn't the skills to access relevant information and use it properly?
What do others think?
(Rant over :-) |
