As I read through Alan Bentham's post on web images and copyright infringement - I was anticipating a earth shattering response which would guide and inform others on the dangers of copyright infrigement - when dealing with digital images.

Nonetheless - I find myself unquenched by the responses he was given. Here's my predicament: I've been developing an online digital image database - which is almost ready to go live (once I load images). But as you guessed it - I can't just load images else i could find myself in Alan & Barbara Davies' situation. How on earth do I even begin getting 'rights' for the hundreds of images I'm about to load? Most were scanned from books and online... Any suggestions and concrete answers as to where i can begin? Does it help if the nature of my project is academic and will be accessed by academics only?
