Why did you choose librarianship?

I'm doing a dissertation (for my MA in Information Services Managament) on entry to the library/ information profession. I'm interested in why people choose this career, what skills they bring to it, whether they had any prior perceptions of what it would involve and whether it has lived up to their expectations so far.
I'm also interested in the effect of professional stereotypes.
Basically, I would just like to hear your own experiences so please do get in touch, whatever you have to say on the matter,
