I am currently looking at topics for my MSc dissertation and one of issues I am interested in is Libraries and Information Services within commercial companies.
I currently work in a library within a commercial company and the entire company is being restructured, people are being made redundant and budgets are being cut. We have just lost a person from the library team and are having to review the services we offer and the way in which they are offered. Another issue is space and we have begun to streamline our holdings.
I've found that a lot of literature regarding libraries refering to the public sector and to academic libraries (which I've found useful to a certain degree) but very little referring to the issues faced by the type of library I work for.
What would be really useful is hearing from other people working in similar functions and hearing about their experiences.
How valued is the information service and its role to your company?
Have you experienced any down sizing in recent years?
Have you managed to keep a reasonably well resource service going? and if so is it because you fall under a particular department? or offer particular resources not found else where in the company but which are highly valued?
The other aspect I want to look at is the future of libraries and information services in commercial companies? Such as moving more towards becoming a digital library? subscribing to electronic journal services? Making use of the internet or company intranet? Or anything that you are willing to tell me about would be useful.
Sorry this is a little vague and there a lot of questions, at this time I'm mainly looking for peoples views and experiences to help me formulate a topic. So if you want to tell me something not asked for above please feel free I would appreciate anything.
Thank you |
